64. REO: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Recruitment
Read time: 5 minutes | Forward to a friend
You've heard of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), the practice of structuring web content to rank high in Google searches. More recently, you may have encountered GEO or AEO (Generative Engine Optimization or AI Engine Optimization), optimizing content so AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude reference it.
But there's a third optimization you've probably never heard of: REO – Recruiter Engine Optimization.
REO is the practice of structuring your LinkedIn profile so it surfaces in the search systems recruiters actually use, primarily LinkedIn Recruiter, a paid platform with over 40 advanced search filters that standard LinkedIn users never see.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: according to LinkedIn, 93% of recruiters use the platform to source candidates. But they're not browsing profiles randomly. They're running targeted Boolean searches with specific keywords, location filters, and skills criteria. Profiles without the right terms get buried on page 15 or beyond where no recruiter will ever find them.
The return on investment is significant: complete LinkedIn profiles receive 21x more views and 36x more messages than incomplete ones. Members who enable the #OpenToWork feature receive 40% more InMails from recruiters.
Most professionals spend hours crafting resumes for applications, yet leave their LinkedIn profiles, the 24/7 passive job application, completely unoptimized for the systems that matter most.
The REO Framework
Building professional independence means understanding and mastering the systems that determine your career visibility. Here's how to think about LinkedIn REO:
Understanding How Recruiters Actually Search
LinkedIn Recruiter isn't like regular LinkedIn. Recruiters use sophisticated search algorithms that prioritize:
- Keyword Relevance: Your profile is scanned for specific terms matching job titles, skills, and industry language
- Profile Completeness: Incomplete profiles are algorithmically deprioritized
- Activity Signals: "Open to Work" status, InMail acceptance rates, and engagement patterns
- Spotlight Filters: Recruiters can specifically filter for candidates "likely to respond" or "interested in your company"
The algorithm uses machine learning to surface candidates who aren't just qualified, but who are likely to engage. Your visibility isn't just about what you know, it's about how your profile signals availability and interest.
The REO Optimization Framework
Step 1: Keyword Research Analyze 5-10 job descriptions for roles you'd want. Note recurring job titles, skills, tools, and responsibilities. These are your target keywords—the exact terms recruiters type into their search bars.
Step 2: Strategic Keyword Placement Your headline carries the highest ranking weight—LinkedIn shows it in every search result, connection request, and comment. Stop using generic titles like "Marketing Professional." Instead: "Senior Marketing Manager | B2B SaaS | Demand Generation & HubSpot"
Your About section gives you 2,600 characters to naturally integrate 8-12 keywords. Your Experience section should include specific tools, methodologies, and results—not just job duties.
Step 3: Skills Optimization LinkedIn allows 50 skills. Use them strategically. Add the exact skill terms from job postings—recruiters can filter by specific combinations. "Project Management" alone is less searchable than "Project Management + Agile + Scrum + Jira."
Step 4: Signal Your Availability Enable "Open to Work" (visible to recruiters only if preferred). Turn on "Signal interest to recruiters at companies you've created job alerts for." These settings push you to the top of search results.
Step 5: Build Engagement Momentum The algorithm favors active profiles. Spend 20-30 minutes daily engaging with content, posting updates, and building connections in your target industry. This activity increases your SSI (Social Selling Index) score, which directly impacts search visibility.

Personal Application Story
I ran an experiment. I created a brand new LinkedIn account from scratch and applied REO principles from day one.
I used the Job Market Analyzer GPT to review over 200 job postings in my target field. It generated a report highlighting the terminology, skills, and requirements common across the industry... the exact language recruiters were using in their searches.
Then I had it analyze both my resume and LinkedIn profile to identify gaps, areas needing updates, and skills I certainly held but had failed to list. The gaps were eye-opening. Skills I used daily weren't mentioned anywhere. Industry terminology I knew well was completely absent from my profile.
I rebuilt the profile using those insights – strategic keywords in my headline, skills section filled with the exact terms from job postings, About section written in the language of my industry.
Within 4 weeks, recruiters were reaching out asking if I'd be interested in applying for positions. Not jobs I applied to – positions that found me.
That's the power of REO.
Make It Happen
This Week:
- Run your target role through the Job Market Analyzer GPT – it will identify the recurring skills, tools, and terminology across hundreds of job postings for you
- Rewrite your LinkedIn headline using the formula: [Target Title] + [Industry/Specialty] + [Key Skills or Tools]
- Add at least 10 new skills to your profile based on the GPT's keyword analysis
This Month:
- Have the Job Market Analyzer GPT analyze your current LinkedIn profile and resume for gaps
- Update your About and Experience sections with the specific language recruiters are searching for
- Enable "Open to Work" and review your privacy settings under Job seeking preferences (Settings & Privacy → Data Privacy → Job seeking preferences)
Reflection Question: If a recruiter searched for someone with your exact skills and experience, would your profile appear on page 1—or page 15?
Community Connection
Reader Question: "I'm worried about my current employer seeing I'm job hunting. Can I optimize my profile without raising red flags?"
Absolutely. REO optimization looks like professional development, not job hunting. Updating your headline to reflect your expertise, adding skills, and engaging with industry content signals ambition, not disloyalty. The "Open to Work" feature can be set to visible only to recruiters, your employer won't see it unless they're actively recruiting for your role.
