28. Stage 3: The Growth Phase — When You’re In Motion, But Need to Stay Consistent

Connect

You made it through the fog of ideas.

You tested something real.

And now—it’s working.

You’ve entered Stage 3: The Growth Phase.

This is where your side hustle shifts from “something I’m trying” to “something I’m building.”

You’re showing up consistently. You’ve seen results—maybe small, maybe big—but now you’re asking:

“How do I keep this going without burning out?”

What Stage 3 Feels Like

You’re in it.

You’ve got some traction—maybe it’s paying clients, growing followers, engaged readers, or repeat sales.

But you’re also juggling a lot:

  • You’re wearing all the hats

  • Your calendar’s getting crowded

  • You’re answering DMs, tweaking offers, building systems—on top of your day job

You’re no longer wondering if this could work.

You’re wondering how to manage it now that it does.

The Big Shift: From Hustle to Habit

Stage 3 is about building consistency without chaos.

That means:

  • Doing what works, repeatedly

  • Cutting what doesn’t

  • Streamlining how you show up and deliver value

This isn’t about scaling to 7 figures (unless you want to).

It’s about creating something sustainable that fits into your life—not takes over your life.

What Trips People Up

Growth brings good problems—but they’re still problems.

Here’s what might be getting in your way:

  • No systems. You’re doing everything manually, which burns time and energy.

  • No prioritization. You’re saying yes to everything because it’s all “working”—but that’s not sustainable.

  • No boundaries. You’re stuck between “this is growing” and “this is exhausting.”

At this point, doing more is no longer the answer.

Doing less, better is the move.

How to Move Forward in Stage 3

Now’s the time to shift from scrappy to strategic.

Here’s what to focus on:

  • Identify what’s working. Look at results—what activities drive the most value, engagement, or income?

  • Systemize your workflow. Automate repeatable tasks. Use templates. Schedule content. Batch your work.

  • Protect your energy. Set limits. Create a realistic schedule. Say no to what doesn’t serve your goals.

  • Think ahead. Where do you want this to go in 6 months? A year? Start shaping your decisions accordingly.

You don’t need to become a CEO.

But you do need to start acting like a builder—not just a doer.

What’s Next

This might be the final stage of the framework, but it’s far from the end.

Most people circle through these phases more than once. They grow, refine, pivot, and revalidate new ideas along the way.

The goal isn’t just to grow your side hustle—it’s to grow with it.

And in the final article of this series, I’ll share a personal reflection on what that has looked like for me.

Stay tuned.

For now, if you’re in Stage 3—celebrate that.

You’re not just thinking about it.

You’re doing it.

Now it’s time to do it in a way that lasts.

Talk soon,

75. The One-Income Trap Isn't About Money, It's About Authority
Read time: 6 minutes | Forward to a friend A few years ago, I watched a talented colleague get laid off. She was great at her job—really great. But when she started looking for what was next, she had nothing to show for a decade of work except a resume full of internal titles nobody outside the company recognized. No articles. No conference talks. No network that knew her by name. She wasn't s...
74. Becoming a Key Person of Influence: Why Authority Beats Expertise Every Time
Read time: 5 minutes | Forward to a friend A few years ago, I sat across the table from one of the most brilliant data scientists I've ever met. This person had solved problems that entire teams couldn't crack. Published nothing. No LinkedIn presence. No conference talks. Completely invisible outside their company walls. That same week, I watched someone with a fraction of that talent post a b...
73. Survivor's Guilt Is the New Layoff : The angle you probably didn't see
Read time: 5 minutes | Forward to a friend Everyone's talking about the 4,000 people Block just cut. And they should be—losing your job is devastating. But there's an angle to this story that almost nobody is covering, and it might matter even more to your career than the layoffs themselves. What happens to the people who survived? One of them, a data scientist named Naoko Takeda, was offered ...
