44. Layoff Season Prep: Building Resilience Through Visibility

The Hidden Opportunity in Uncertain Times

Last month, I watched a former colleague get blindsided by a "restructuring" announcement. Talented, hardworking, loyal...all the qualities we're told matter. But here's what I noticed: while everyone scrambled to update their resumes, the people who landed on their feet fastest weren't necessarily the most qualified. They were the most visible.

When layoffs loom, most professionals go into hiding mode. We keep our heads down, avoid "rocking the boat," and hope good work speaks for itself. But what if the very thing we think will protect us is actually making us more vulnerable?

The Invisibility Trap

Here's the uncomfortable truth about layoff season: decisions often get made in rooms where your work isn't represented, but your reputation might be. When leadership asks "Who are our key players?" or "Who would be hard to replace?" the names that surface aren't just the highest performers. They're the people whose value is already understood and articulated.

The data backs this up. A recent study found that 67% of layoff decisions are influenced by "organizational visibility factors"... basically, how well leadership knows and understands your contributions. Yet most professionals actively avoid visibility during uncertain times, believing that "staying under the radar" is safer.

This creates what I call the Invisibility Trap: the more we hide to protect ourselves, the less protected we actually become. Meanwhile, those who strategically increase their visibility, both internally and externally, build the very resilience networks that create safety during turbulent times.

The RISE Framework for Visibility-Based Resilience

Instead of choosing between career safety and strategic positioning, what if we could build resilience through visibility? Here's a systematic approach:

Recognize the difference between helpful visibility and harmful visibility. Helpful visibility showcases your value, expertise, and collaborative spirit. Harmful visibility draws attention to complaints, conflicts, or self-promotion without substance. Most professionals avoid all visibility because they're afraid of the harmful kind.

Investigate your current visibility gaps. Ask yourself: If you left tomorrow, would your manager be able to articulate your specific contributions to their boss? Do people outside your immediate team know what you're good at? Can colleagues easily refer opportunities your way? These gaps represent vulnerability points that strategic visibility can address.

Strategize your visibility plan across three timeframes:

  • Immediate (next 30 days): Internal positioning and contribution documentation
  • Short-term (next 90 days): Industry engagement and external network building
  • Long-term (next 12 months): Thought leadership and expertise positioning

Execute through the "Resilience Visibility Framework":

  1. Document and communicate wins internally: Create a weekly "wins report" for your manager highlighting not just what you completed, but the impact it created. This isn't bragging, it's business intelligence.
  2. Become the connector: Introduce colleagues who should know each other, share relevant articles with your network, and become known as someone who adds value to others' professional lives.
  3. Share expertise strategically: Write one thoughtful comment per week on industry posts, share one insight from your work (without proprietary details), or answer one question in professional groups.
  4. Build your "professional portfolio": Maintain an updated record of projects, skills, and achievements that translates across companies and industries, not just for job searches, but for internal opportunities too.
  5. Cultivate external relationships: Schedule one coffee chat per month with a professional contact outside your company. This isn't about job hunting, it's about maintaining a broader professional perspective and network.

When Visibility Felt Scary (And What I Learned)

When my former company announced "organizational changes" two years ago, my first instinct was to disappear. Stop posting on LinkedIn, skip the industry meetups, focus exclusively on my immediate work. Classic hiding behavior.

But then I realized: if my job disappeared tomorrow, how many people outside my company even knew what I did? The answer was sobering... maybe five people could articulate my professional value.

So I tried an experiment. Instead of broadcasting "look at me" content, I started sharing insights from projects I was working on (appropriately scrubbed of confidential details). I commented thoughtfully on posts from industry leaders. I even wrote a brief article about a process improvement our team had implemented.

The result wasn't what I expected. Instead of feeling exposed or vulnerable, I felt more confident. Those external conversations helped me see my skills more clearly. When the layoffs did come (thankfully, I wasn't affected), several colleagues who had been let go mentioned that they wished they'd built those outside connections sooner.

More importantly, the visibility work made me better at my actual job. Explaining my work to others clarified my thinking. Engaging with industry discussions sparked new ideas. Building relationships led to collaboration opportunities.

Your Visibility-Resilience Action Plan

This Week:

  • Create a "contributions tracker" documenting your weekly wins and their business impact
  • Identify three industry voices you could thoughtfully engage with on social platforms
  • Send one "connecting people" email introducing two colleagues who should know each other

This Month:

  • Schedule coffee chats with two professional contacts outside your company
  • Share one professional insight or lesson learned (keeping it general, not company-specific)
  • Update your internal profile/bio to reflect your current expertise and interests

Reflection Question: If a recruiter asked five people in your industry about your professional reputation, what would they say? If you can't confidently answer this, it's time to build more strategic visibility.

Community Spotlight

Reader Chris shared how she applied this approach: "I started sharing weekly 'lessons learned' posts about project management on LinkedIn. Nothing groundbreaking, just honest insights from my work. Three months later, when our department got restructured, I had two external job offers and an internal transfer opportunity, all from people who had been following my posts. Visibility saved my career transition."
